Mounjaro (tirzepatide) – Who Can Get It on the NHS?

We’ve had many questions about Mounjaro, the new weight loss injection. Here’s what you need to know:

Mounjaro is currently only available on the NHS for a small group of patients, under strict criteria:

You must:

  • Have a BMI of 40+, or 37.5+ if you’re from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic background
  • Have 4 or more weight-related health conditions (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, heart disease)

It’s initially being prescribed by specialist hospital clinics, and from 23rd June it will be possible for GPs to prescribe, where a local contract exists. Please note that there is no current contract in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, but the ICB are working on this. Further information can be found on the ICS webpage It will also be only for people who meet the above criteria.

It is not available for general weight loss or cosmetic reasons, even if you’re willing to pay privately.
